11 October, 2017
2017 is the year the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron brought back the America’s Cup to New Zealand soil, with its team Emirates Team New Zealand beating the Oracle Team USA 7-1 in Bermuda. The prestigious Yacht club first won the America’s Cup back in 1995, defended the title successfully before losing in 2003. There was a strong sense of national pride throughout New Zealand when the trophy returned after three failed challenges to bring home the America’s Cup to Westhaven Marina. The past 14 years, the world’s oldest trophy has been abroad in Switzerland and the United States of America. In July, the Auckland street parade saw tens of thousands of fans congratulating Emirates Team New Zealand that the America’s Cup was home again. It will be defended in 2021.
